Crowns, Inlays, & Onlays

DENTAL CROWNS PROTECT AND SUPPORT YOUR TEETH

Your teeth are both functional and cosmetic, acting as tools that allow you to chew, speak clearly, and display a smile. When tooth decay or another form of trauma damages the structure of your tooth, you may require coverage and supplemental support from dental crowns, inlays, or onlays. Physically repairing your tooth restores your function and beauty, so you may move comfortably and confidently through daily life.

Dental Crowns

What Are They?

We will suggest a dental crown for a tooth that requires significant repair but that is healthy enough to remain in your mouth. For a tooth too damaged or infected, we may instead recommend an extraction. A crown is a hollow artificial tooth custom-fitted to sit permanently over your natural tooth. Crowns offer protection, coverage, and structural support.

What Types Do You Offer?

Dr. McElravy provides dental crowns made of porcelain, zirconia, porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM), or metal. She will determine which material suits your needs according to the location of the affected tooth. Consider the following:

  • Porcelain: Crafted out of a lifelike material with a translucent finish, porcelain crowns are well suited to anterior, visible teeth.

  • Zirconia: Similar to porcelain, zirconia provides a natural finish that we may easily color-match to your surrounding smile. Its strength makes it an excellent candidate for load-bearing teeth without compromising your smile’s cosmetic uniformity.

  • PFM: Porcelain placed on a metal base provides attention to cosmetic detail with the added benefit of metal’s unsurpassable strength.

  • Metal: Offering the greatest strength and durability, this budget-friendly crown protects load-bearing teeth.

Dental Crowns Benefits

Damage requiring a dental crown occurs as the results of a variety of causes, which may include: A broken tooth, a fractured tooth, a tooth suffering from extensive tooth decay, or a tooth that has just undergone root canal treatment. Crowns also pose as artificial support teeth to a dental prosthetic like a dental bridge, or as the restoration for a dental implant.

Understanding Inlays and Onlays

When a dental filling is insufficient but a dental crown is not yet necessary to address your tooth damage, we may turn to an inlay or onlay. These pre-fabricated pieces are shaped to fit an opening in your tooth that has resulted from decay or breakage. An inlay restores the structure of missing tissue between your cusps. An onlay replaces damaged cusps or tissue that extends down the side of your tooth.
