What Can I Expect?

We will thoroughly numb your tooth and surrounding tissues, and will monitor your comfort throughout the procedure. Dr. McElravy will then gently remove your tooth with the use of special dental forceps. You will receive special instructions for aftercare. Primarily, you must avoid chewing and sucking to allow a clot to form – this is your body’s natural scabbing process. Dislodging the clot may result in a painful disorder called dry socket, which will require additional treatment. By resting, eating soft foods, and following our directions, you can expect to heal successfully.

Why Do I Need An Extraction?

Helping you retain your natural teeth is always our first goal. However, when a diseased tooth threatens your oral health or surrounding teeth, an extraction acts as a protective measure. We may suggest tooth removal for the following reasons:

• Root canal treatment has failed

• Your tooth suffers from severe infection

• Your tooth is too damaged for a restoration, such as a dental crown
